- Tracking using data-loggers on Calonectris diomedea borealis, and eventually Pterodroma feae, on the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and Berlenga.
For larger birds, the more advanced technology of data-loggers will be used. Currently, the only bird that we can use this device on is Cory's Shearwater, Calonectris diomedea borealis. The data-loggers require the recapture of birds to collect the gathered data, which means spending longer at the colony. The weight of the birds defines the weight of the batteries, and this in turn defines the duration of the logger: in this case around 10 days for gathering minute-by-minute information. The use of data-loggers on Cory's Shearwater will allow us to find its distribution at sea during the breeding season from the occurrence maps obtained by the analysis of localizations of marked individuals. We will also know the activity of the birds, giving us information on the use of the marine environment - feeding, resting, access to feeding areas etc. This information will allow the definition of the regular areas of feeding and occurrence of this species in the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and Berlenga. Potentially, this action could give us the same results for P. feae on the archipelago of Madeira. |
